Anxiety Facts
How Common is Anxiety?
Anxiety disorders, as a group, are very common in America. Over 19 million adults are affected by these debilitating conditions each year. Children and Teens also develop anxiety.
How is Anxiety Treated?
A number of medications that were originally approved for treating depression have been found to be effective for anxiety as well. The newest of these antidepressants are called SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Some of the other anti-anxiety medications include groups of drugs called beta blockers and benzodiazepines.
Two clinically-proven effective forms of psychotherapy that are often used to treat anxiety disorders are behavioral therapy and cognitive therapy, sometimes combined into Cognitive Behavior Therapy.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy teaches patients to understand and change their thinking patterns so they can react differently to the situations that cause them anxiety. CBT, as it is often called, was originally considered a Complementary and Alternative Medicine, until it's widespread adaptation into conventional medical practice.
Do Anxiety Disorders Co-Exist with Other Physical or Mental Disorders?
It is common for anxiety to accompany depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, or another or other types of anxiety disorders. Anxiety can also co-exist with illnesses and diseases such as cancer or heart disease. In these instances, the accompanying disorders will also need to be treated. Before beginning any treatment, however, it is important to have a thorough medical examination to rule out other possible causes of the symptoms.
