What is Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)?

Complementary and Alternative Medicines, or CAMs, are a group of medical practices and health care systems that are not considered within the scope of conventional medicine. There are currently many medical practices that are considered complementary and alternative medicines, including whole alternative medical systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, mind-body medicines such as meditation and Yoga, biologically-based therapies such as herbal medicine, manipulative and body-based methods like massage therapy, and energy therapies that include Qi Gong and Reiki. Certain complementary and alternative techniques, such as herbal medicine and dietary supplementation, are finding their way into more mainstream medical practices. Although there are a wealth of different complementary and alternative medicine practices, most CAM therapies are based on the philosophy that the body has the ability to heal itself when kept in a state of natural balance, and the aim of these CAMs is to help facilitate that healthy balance through natural means.
